Thread: RP500 / RP1000 vs POD HD

    Default RP500 / RP1000 vs POD HD

I don't know if this has been done anywhere but I'm here in Poland looking for an all in one fx unit. I'm torn between the new POD HD300 and the RP 500 Digitech series.

I'm not bothered about having only 16 amp models on POD - just wanted to know how does the POD HD stack up against Digitech. Is the HD all hype or is it actually better?

    Any help much appreciated.

Search for POD HD500. You should find a few threads on it. I got one and didn't prefer it over my RP1000.

UPDATE (10/2011): The latest updates have improved the tone of the amp models a lot. I like what they've done and own an HD500 again.

it's all about your ear. to my ear...the rp series wins. that's only based on internet clips, which can be very deceiving. even my own internet clips don't sound like they do in my room.

i'm going to guitar center today to check it out. i'll post my thoughts later today.

There's a thread over at Harmony Central where a couple of guys over there bought the HD and are returning it. Supposedly not enough difference between it and the X3 series to warrant the new purchase.

i watched this video and decided not to waste time on the pod hd for now. i wasn't feeling up to driving 50 miles to guitar center after watching this youtube video.

these guys normally get some really rocking tone out of amps and mfx. i found the pod hd to sound too "grainy" if that makes sense. not warm and woody. not real. better than the pod xt live though.

i liked the tone of this stompbox preamp better:

the yamaha dg stomp sounds more organic to my ears anyway.

its obvious that digitech has done big steps forward with the rp/gsp units...and the key was that you can still have your tone...thats why so many pro's have gsp's and axe-fx to their racks...with pods i believe its pod tone all the way

I think the PODHD sounds a feels considerably better than the Digitech RP series. However, in a foreign country, I'd make sure you have a tech than can fix mechanical issues as I feel the PODs foot switches are bound to fail at some point.

If you have a good ear, it is possible to make the PODHD sound very good. Many Amps will need tweaking with Cabs Mics and EQing....but if you know what you are doing, the results can be impressive.

Those that don't hear and feel the difference between the X3 and the HD, lets just say I'd take their opinion about tone with a grain of salt.

"HD" might be marketing hype, but it is one of the best modelers ever made that doesn't come in a rack unit. The HD300 is a great value. It does impart a POD like stamp, but it is much more refined than previous offerings. I found it to be cleaner sounding than my recently sold VOX Tonelab. And it is only budget modeler that I feel can compete with my $4000 direct rig.
